Guest Trip Report – Chalet Bonjour-Brunswick
We have some great feedback from Juliette who has recently stayed at the brand new Chalet Bonjour-Brunswick (part of the Canadienne collection of chalets) in the heart of Val d’Isère, here’s her report:
Dates of holiday:
|15th to 22nd January 2017|
View from the chalet balcony
What did you like about this chalet?
A fantastic contemporary chalet! Brand new this year. The living area was really spacious with plenty of room for everyone to sit comfortably around the dining table together, and also good comfortable sofas, again space enough for everyone. This meant that it was easy to relax with others once back from the slopes each day. We had a beautiful bedroom with a modern ensuite bathroom with a separate shower as well as a bath which was great for soaking those tired muscles! Although the hot tub on the balcony was brilliant for this too! Another time I would take some flipflops with me as stepping out of the hot tub onto the snowy balcony at -20 meant a very quick dash back into the chalet!
Did you hire ski equipment with our recommended supplier and what did you think?
Ski Bonjour work closely with Tignes Spirit for ski rental so we booked our skis with them. Tignes Spirit come to your chalet to fit your equipment and pick it up again at the end of the week – so no queues in the equipment store. Hooray! They offered a great service with good quality skis.
Our chalet hosts had our ski passes waiting for us when we arrived. All that was left for us to do was unpack and relax.
Did you enjoy the food & wine?
Matt’s cooking was a highlight! At the end of every day fresh cake for afternoon tea was waiting, which helped revitalize us – especially as we had a particularly cold week of weather. The evening menu has obviously been given considerable thought and had just the right balance of excellent dishes without the food being too fancy or rich. The roast beef we had on our first evening was the best I have had! The wines were also very good and freely available throughout dinner.
What was your ski holiday highlight?
The skiing conditions across Val d’Isère and Tignes. Although off-piste skiing was limited while we were there the snow on the pistes was brilliant! We have been in other resorts over the past few years and we have had to fit in with school holidays which have been great but busy. I had almost forgotten what a joy it is to have the piste to yourself in great snow conditions. My carving technique improved and despite full days out my legs didn’t get sore!! We will definitely be looking to return at a similar time of year. Although it was cold the sun was out all day, every day.
Which restaurant did you eat at on staff day off and would you recommend it to others?
We ate at La Casserole, they specialise in regional fondue meals. The bar area seems very small when you go into the restaurant, but take a few more steps and it opens out. You could go as a large group or just as a couple. It had a nice buzzy atmosphere. We went for a cheese fondu which was good and not too expensive.
What did you think of the nightlife?
Sadly, thanks to a bad cold, we didn’t make the most of the night life in Val. There are loads of bars and clubs though so plenty of après when you want it!
What was the skiing like (terrain, lift system, convenience)?
Loved the skiing! There is huge variety and there really is something and lots of it for everyone. Val d’Isère is usually considered ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers. However one of the lovely things about it is the number of green runs high up out of the village. Beginners can easily experience the magic and beauty of the Alps right from their first day as you can simply come down in the bubble at the end of the day, there are even seat warmers on the new Solaise bubble! Heaps of more challenging runs and long exhausting blacks too! Extensive off-piste skiing is there when the snow conditions are right. Our favourite day of skiing was up on the Grande Motte in Tignes. It didn’t snow much while we were there but as it was so cold the wonderful snow conditions lasted, every day was a bluebird day!
If flying, which airport did you fly to and how was your transfer experience?
We flew from Manchester to Geneva and then had a transfer to resort with Simply Transfers. Transfer day is always tiring – getting up early for the airport etc, but the transfer was pretty straight forward. The roads were pretty clear on the Sunday so the journey was easy, although we were last off the transfer, the driver kindly took us to the door of our chalet rather than dropping at the Bus Station in the centre of Val D’Isère. Although the bus station is only only a few minutes’ walk away from the Bonjour Canadienne Chalets.
We would like to thank Juliette enormously for her time and letting us know her thoughts about this new chalet. It’s great to hear from you and we loved hearing about your stay with Ski Bonjour. Thank you!
